This will be blog No. 10 and therefore, the last of this first page.
First of all, let me announce to those who may not be interested in reading too much this topic of the cross… that at the end there is a naturopathic pearl that men should read… Very important…
The following thoughts are what I have learned in the last 32 years of running this race towards the Promised Land. It is not extracted from any book, unless it is quote and I mention the author or if I refer directly to what a Saint or Pope wrote… So, take it with a grain of salt because it is my own understanding about this very important topic and command to become a disciple — “pick up your cross daily…”
As I had written before and in my perception, the greatest cross is to deny ourselves, our needs for self satisfaction, or simply said, when I want “my way o no way.” The second greatest cross is our actual “resistance” to our crosses. It also represents the most encountered temptation to disobey God’s will… Satan is in charge of this temptation, of our constant desire to flee our crosses by trying to change them at all cost or at least modify them; or worse, to escape the events and circum-stances that are the sources of our cross. The resistance can take also other forms: for example, constant grumbling and God showed us that Israel spent 40 years in the dessert precisely for resisting their crosses in the form of grumbling.
At any rate, any resistance or escaping of a cross is an act of disobedience to God’s will for us at that moment. We know it is a grave sin because Peter told Jesus that he would see to it that the upcoming announced passion would not happen and Jesus answered, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an obstacle to Me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Mt. 16: 23. It is obvious that part of my daily conversion is to “see” the crosses around me and never try to resist them, although I still do and often try to entice my God to try my own plans to get rid of X cross!!!
But first I had to define by myself what embracing my cross meant, or how to pick it up daily. So, of and on I sat and wrote a list of my “battles” or those problems that brought me crosses. I then learned that I had to own them by accepting the pain, the bitterness. Finally, I had to bring them to my Lord at Mass and place them in the paten tagged as suffering/sacrifice, and offer them for the salvation of many souls, and just like He did, because my crosses have a huge amount of redemptive power for myself and others, but only if I pick them up, accept them and thank God for them as I place in the Altar of Sacrifice at each Mass.
Unfortunately, our Priests cannot talk much from the ambo about the cross because our society has led us to believe that self-gratification is our right… Self-gratification rights have become a disguised behavior by which we try to ignore the pain of our crosses with excessive amount of news, music, make-believe movies and soap operas, etc., and no doubt in my mind that Satan has reigned in this department. News, music and movies and reading all kinds of material are wonderful… if they do not exclude the inner silence that is required to “understand and embrace our crosses” as instruments of grace. To repudiate our crosses in any form is equivalent to robbing ourselves of great blessings, even when we consider impossible to live through them, since He promised that He would not send us what we could not bear, and it is here that His mercy takes care of our ability to carry them.
In fact, silence becomes dangerous because it makes us confront our own pain, which also means to confront our own emptiness or our ego needs that scream for answers and gratification. All along, that emptiness can only be filled up by the love of God as we submit to His will including all the crosses He is allowing in our lives. In fact, I have discovered in my own journey that the more I grumble or resist my crosses, that much difficult it is for me to love my persecutors. The more I enter into the mystery of the cross, so well modeled by many Saints after Jesus Himself came to show us the way to His Father, that much more I am patient and loving for those who give me crosses.
In other words, the daily crosses, when embraced as an act of my will, produce much love for God and my neighbor. And it goes beyond that: after Jesus had ascended and under very heavy crosses of persecution, His disciples preached salvation, welcomed martyrdom and traveled rejoicing when stoned or scourged (ACTS of the Apostles). Therefore, joy, peace and a great disposition to love even persecutors, are the fruits of accepting our crosses as spiritual diamonds to adorn our souls.
There is so much that our Saints have written about it, and in future blogs I will quote them. Again, the trick for me has been to give up my trying to escape my crosses or asking God to take them away, because His mercy precisely does that to us: it teaches us, reproves and admonishes us “as a shepherd guides his flock” (Sirach 18), and obviously He makes use of suffering/crosses/battles for this training. Each cross is a well designed bridge to intimacy with Him on this earth and eventually in eternal life. Otherwise, Jesus did not have to be crucified… He could have been killed with a poison and not with so much suffering. Now, it is up to us to do the same for our brothers and sisters (there is no greater love than to lie down our lives for our brothers), and it is just as powerful since He said so, that we could do even greater things than He was doing at the time. When I resist my crosses, and I do very often, I then turn to Him and ask for His mercy, so that once I realize my error and repent, this powerful tool of His love can complete the work and give me the courage to walk with Him to Calvary every day of my life, and most of the time not understanding why those crosses come to my life.
Can I sell this discourse to my neighbor? I have found out that I cannot… It is only the Holy Ghost that could operate changes in souls to enter the mystery of the cross… For most it is Chinese! But as I offer my crosses to my Father, like Jesus does at every Mass, His merits are tagged to my little offering and His mercy takes over in many souls and I have seen many resurrections… It is amazing what my crosses can do when I use the merits of His Cross!
NATUROPATHIC PEARL:
Three cancers are very well known to start with inflammation in the particular organ: colon, breast and prostate. Prostate will become enlarged in men to the point of needing to be removed to give back space that takes away from the urinary bladder. The name is BPH – benign prostatic hypertrophy (enlargement). It is not cancer, but becomes a mechanical obstruction to the flow of urine. It happens that avocados are excellent for this malady because they have a substance that inhibits the benign growth of the prostate. In the other hand, if a man already has cancer of this gland, which in itself is always very slow growing, there are certain foods that help to shrink the cancer. Among them, we have hot peppers, selenium, and zinc. Book to read: “You, Staying Young”… I know one of the authors, Dr. Michael Roizen. He also discusses the way how men can live healthy sexual lives into old age.
Dr. Roizen became chief of the anesthesia department in a major Chicago university and finally, around the year 2,000 he moved as head of anesthesia for the Cleveland Clinic. In the mid 90’s, he started speaking to us in our anesthesia conferences on the subject of “real age.” We lose cells every day and make many more. Every couple of decades, most of our body is new, except for our heart and most of brain cells. Our chronological age does not reveal our “real age” if we feed our bodies with the right vita-nutrients and foods to make new cells that are comparable to cells of much earlier age. So, this man is reputable and his book written with a cardiac surgeon from New York, Dr. Oz, is worthwhile reading and following it.

Abrazando nuestras cruces!
No, no puedo…
